Trazodone is a SARI, or serotonin antagonist/reuptake inhibitor. It appears to work by releasing serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that regulates behavior, awareness of pain, appetite, body temperature, movement, and function of the lungs and heart. Dogs showing complusive behaviors, chronic pain, separation anxiety and situational fears like fireworks or thunderstorms are often prescribed Trazodone to keep them calm. Similarly, cats can experience generalized anxiety disorders and the same situational fears as dogs. Trazodone is prescribed, as a short-term anxiety medication, for anxiety and aggression during certain situations where the cat experiences increased levels of anxiety and stress, such as being transported in a pet carrier.

In dogs, it is also used to keep them at ease following surgery and as an add on drug for behavioral problems when there's not an adequate respond to just one medication being used. In cats, it is also used to help with other anxiety disorders like aggression, hyperactivity, and elimination outside of the liter box.
